Funeral Home Safety Protection Clean Rooms

The five rooms where bodies and ashes are handled are the five rooms where funeral staff are most exposed. This solution treats the air in each of them as contaminated by default and encloses it accordingly.

01 What it solves

After death the body becomes a habitat for micro-organisms. Surface, oral, nasal and skin loads are heavy, and even a death from non-infectious causes leaves a substantial microbial population. Body fluids and surfaces release pathogens into the surrounding air.

In a funeral home the exposure is not confined to one room. The vehicle, the refrigerated room, the mortuary, the embalming room and the cremation hall are directly contaminated; the transport corridors, memorial halls and farewell halls are indirectly contaminated. Bacterial counts in cremation halls, mortuaries and cosmetics rooms exceed any comparable public-space standard.

Why ordinary ventilation is not enough

A conventional air-conditioning retrofit recirculates. In these rooms that means returning contaminated air to the space it came from. The route of transmission for organisms such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Bacillus anthracis is exactly this airborne one.

02 What the solution includes

Enclosed clean-room construction

Rooms lined with 50 mm rock-wool fire- and heat-insulated sandwich panels, decorated into a sterile, relatively sealed controllable space, over PVC flooring.

Dedicated outdoor-air system

Outdoor air is temperature-conditioned, filtered and delivered at controlled pressure through a static-pressure box with perforated equalising plates. Fresh air only — no recirculation.

Micro-negative pressure

Every purified zone is held at slight negative pressure so odour cannot escape the room and contaminate the surrounding space.

Terminal filtration

Filters are placed at the end of the system, close to the room, rather than only at the plant.

Multi-stage exhaust treatment

Extracted air passes through activated-carbon adsorption, ultraviolet sterilisation, amalgam sterilisation and plasma modules in series before discharge.

Independent zone control

Each purified zone is controlled separately, so zones can be run independently and one zone's shut-down does not stop the others.

One-touch central control

A touchscreen starts and stops the whole system, with parameters set and modified per customer requirement.

Optional room fit-out

Changing rooms, rest rooms and washrooms can be added to the clean zone, along with equipment such as refrigerated embalming tables.

03 How it works

The design is a two-way, all-fresh-air system: one forced supply system and one forced exhaust system. Fresh air enters through the supply ductwork, exhaust leaves through the exhaust ductwork, and the two are balanced against each other to hold the pressure gradients the zones need.

01

Filter

Outdoor air is filtered and conditioned before it enters the room.

02

Equalise

Air passes through the static-pressure box and its perforated plates so it spreads evenly rather than blowing at people.

03

Dilute

Clean air continuously displaces contaminated air, including odour released by the body.

04

Contain

Micro-negative pressure keeps the contaminated air inside the zone.

05

Extract

High-volume low-noise centrifugal fans move the contaminated air out at high air-change rates.

06

Treat

The exhaust is treated through carbon, UV, amalgam and plasma stages before it leaves the building.

Cleanliness is set by airflow, not by equipment

For non-unidirectional flow, air-change rate determines the achievable class. Around 50–60 changes per hour reaches ISO 6 or better, 25–40 reaches ISO 7, and roughly 15 reaches ISO 8–9 — measured in the empty and at-rest states.

Installation is governed by an in-house specification — ten chapters and close to one hundred clauses covering installation and acceptance — so the built result is checked against the design rather than assumed.

05 Where it applies

Five zones in a funeral home are scoped by this solution. The same construction and airflow logic is applied to each, sized to the room's function.

Beyond funeral homes, the same system is used in forensic anatomy laboratories, medical school anatomy laboratories and hospital pathology departments, on industrial and biosafety clean rooms, and on office and living accommodation attached to these zones.

08 Questions buyers ask

Why do you use 100% outdoor air rather than mixing in return air?

Because return air is the transmission route. Mixing saves energy but puts contaminated air back into the room. The system is a two-way all-fresh-air design: one forced supply, one forced exhaust.

What clean-room class can you achieve?

For non-unidirectional flow, the air-change rate sets the class. Around 50–60 changes per hour reaches ISO 6 or better, 25–40 reaches ISO 7, and about 15 reaches ISO 8–9. Higher classes are possible with unidirectional flow, at substantially higher build and running cost.

Does the treated exhaust really remove odour?

The exhaust passes through carbon adsorption, UV, amalgam and plasma treatment in series, which is reported at 99.9% deodorisation and sterilisation. The rooms are also held at slight negative pressure so odour does not escape in the first place.

Will this increase our energy bill substantially?

It is a real load, and it is managed. Cremation halls can run evaporative eco-cooling at roughly a tenth of the energy of purified cooling for the same airflow, and each cremator can have its own fan so only the running units are ventilated.
